Dirt and dual-sport motorcycles require routine chain maintenance and periodic parts replacement. In this 28-minute HD video, the magazine’s Honda XR650R dual sport-converted enduro bike gets final drive system attention. This presents an opportunity to upgrade the chain and sprockets. The detailed, step-by-step coverage of this important service also provides tips on how to improve your dirt or dual-sport bike’s reliability and stamina. The magazine’s Honda XR650R video filming platform provides a rugged equipment package for open desert riding. Some consider 300 pounds “wet” as heavy, though this did not prevent repeated wins of Baja 1000 Races with the additional weight of a large fuel tank and race lighting. (We added racks, bags and a dual-sport conversion!) The factory 2.6 gallon fuel tank is simply too small for dual-sport use or long races! Consulting with Just Gas Tanks, we picked the Acerbis Sahara 6.3 gallon replacement tank as our solution. In this detailed how-to HD video, see the installation of this large capacity aftermarket tank on our Honda XR650R motorcycle!
The magazine’s Honda XR650R dual-sport motorcycle carries valuable video equipment and camping gear into the backcountry. For rugged, well-crafted luggage, durable racks and substantial engine protection that will hold up to dirt and off-road motorsports environments, we turned to TCI Products and Nelson-Rigg luggage. Nelson-Rigg luggage offers utility, high quality materials and versatility. TCI Products provides the best engineering and fit in racks, skid plates and engine guards. In this video series, see how Nelson-Rigg motorcycle luggage and TCI Products racks and engine protection work for us!
In this two-part HD video series, we mount and test Michelin’s T63 and Cross AC10 dual-sport motorcycle tires. These tires and matching tubes are DOT approved for use on public roads and highways. The T63 is a 50/50 highway and off-pavement design. The Cross AC10 has a rugged enduro-type tread design for 90% off-pavement use. Our testbed for these tires is the magazine’s popular Honda XR650R dual-sport motorcycle with DOT on-highway needs plus remote backcountry use. The bike serves as a platform for filming HD video in the field, doubling as a technical how-to subject!
The magazine launched “The Off-Road Motorcycle Channel” with this engine diagnostics and troubleshooting how-to video. Moses Ludel discusses cylinder leak down testing, as he pinpoints the low engine compression source on t he magazine’s Honda XR650R motorcycle. In this HD video, learn how to perform a cylinder leak down test on any internal combustion engine and why this is a superior diagnostic tool!
In this instructional HD video series, Moses Ludel rebuilds the top end of the magazine’s Honda XR650R motorcycle engine. Low compression led to the tear down. (See the HD video how-to on the cylinder leak down test.) The tear down led to a sublet of the cylinder head and cylinder for machining and reconditioning at L.A. Sleeve Company. For an overview of the teardown and removal of the cylinder head and cylinder barrel, click here!
The rebuild of the Honda XR650R upper engine is now available as a 54-minute HD video step-by-step upper engine how-to rebuild! Rent the entire program, including the bonus segments on valve adjustment and tuning, at Vimeo On Demand.*
*For those doing only a valve adjustment on this four-stroke engine (and other four-strokes with conventional rocker adjusters), a valve adjustment standalone video is also available at Vimeo On Demand. Each video rents for a 30-day period, allowing enough time for parts delays, machining sublets and other time constraints or challenges!
The magazine’s Honda XR650R motorcycle came with very low hours on the bike. Unfortunately, the air filter had been sealing badly, and the result was an engine with damaged valves and excessively low compression. We turned to L.A. Sleeve Company for its Moly 2000 iron/chrome-moly alloy cylinder sleeve and cylinder head rebuilding. In this HD video, see what it takes to build an ultra reliable cylinder head and barrel at L.A. Sleeve Company. This bike will be used extensively as an HD video filming platform, and our aim is maximum dependability in remote backcountry!
In this HD video interview from the 2013 Lucas Off-Road Expo, Jesse Williamson, Nick Hamm and Brett Robinson share their Race for the Wounded and Warrior Built plans for Jesse to race the 2013 Baja 1000 on a Honda CRF450X motorcycle. Williamson, a U.S. Marine combat vet, became the first double amputee to race the Baja 1000 on a dirt motorcycle. See details, race pit action plus Jesse and Nick’s comments after the race!
